GSTR-2B reconciliation: a monthly process that prevents most GST notices

BAL Global Consulting2026-11-085 min read

Most GST notices to compliant companies are not about tax evasion. They arise from input credit claimed in GSTR-3B that does not appear in GSTR-2B, or from differences between the books, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and the annual return. A disciplined monthly reconciliation removes almost all of them.

Why GSTR-2B matters

GSTR-2B is the static statement of input tax credit available to you for a month, generated from what your suppliers have filed. Credit claimed in GSTR-3B is expected to be supported by GSTR-2B. If a supplier has not filed, filed late, or reported your invoice under the wrong GSTIN, the credit is not in 2B and claiming it anyway invites a notice. Notices issued in August 2026 covered exactly this: credit above 2B and differences between books, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9.

The monthly sequence

By the 11th, GSTR-1 is filed from the sales register. By the 14th, GSTR-2B is available on the portal. Between the 14th and the 18th, the purchase register is matched to 2B line by line: invoice number, date, GSTIN, taxable value and tax. Matched credit is claimed. Unmatched items are classified and acted on. GSTR-3B is filed by the 20th with the reconciled figure.

The key is that the match happens before 3B, not after. Reconciling at year end means credit has already been claimed on unsupported invoices for months.

The usual differences and what to do

Supplier has not filed: hold the credit, write to the supplier, claim when it appears. Wrong GSTIN quoted by supplier: ask for an amendment in their next GSTR-1. Invoice booked in your records in a later month than the supplier reported: claim in the month it appears in 2B and note the timing difference. Credit notes not matched: reverse credit where the supplier has reduced the invoice. Blocked credits (Section 17(5) items such as certain vehicles, food, club memberships): exclude from the claim regardless of 2B.

Keep a running list of vendors with repeated mismatches. A supplier who is consistently late with GSTR-1 is costing you working capital, and that is a commercial conversation, not just a compliance one.

Controls that make it routine

Vendor master with verified GSTINs. Purchase booking cut-off two days before 2B generation. A standard reconciliation sheet with fixed categories. A monthly sign-off showing claimed credit, held credit and reversed credit. These four items are part of the monthly close in every BAL engagement, and the sign-off is shared with the client as part of the close checklist.

Want this handled every month by a partner-led team? Packages start at Rs 1,20,000 a month, with scope in writing.
